Military chevy axles

Ok....

I've found a guy with a set of 3/4 ton axles he'll sell me for (relatively) cheap.

This is at an army surplus place btw...

Anyways, he said he pulled them from a 3/4 ton military chevy pickup, both 8 lug, dana 60 f/f rear and a HD 44 front.

I wouldn't question anything except there are no hubs on the front. The rotors look just like 2wd rotors, just like on the newer pickups with the IFS.

Someone else told me that this means the axles are really from a dodge and are full time 4x4, and thus not what I need.

Is it possible they are still chevy axles and just have fully internal auto hubs? Or are they dodge axles I need to avoid?

Didn't have the camera with me so no pictures.

I might pick up just the rear anyway if the brake parts are still availible for it. Need to go and look again another day...

The only axles I've seen in a military Chevy pickup were 60 front and 70 rear and front had lockouts.

That's the CUCV, 1 1/4 ton trucks... he has an ambulance like that... in really nice shape.

They also have some plain 3/4 ton 4x4s in addition wo the 1 1/4 tons with normal axles, but I thought they'd be set up the same as the CUCVs are... trying to figure that part out...

With CUCV's, there's 2 basic set ups for the pick-ups. The basic M1008 is a 5/4 and then the ambulances and shelter carriers (commo rigs) are 5/4 with overloads to handle the extra weight of the shelters. Other than that they are the same trucks.

Gotcha, don't know much about the 5/4 tons... wish I could find one though... still don't know if I should go after these axles, don't want to get stuck with something I can't use.

I have never heard of a military Chevrolet Dana 44 frontend, but I have heard of them in the military Dodge trucks, like board member Crank's Dodge M886 Ambulance. Those all used the NP203, so no need for hubs. All CUCV's used dana 60 front/corp 14bff rear, except the blazer version...which used dual 10 bolts.
Since they are a d44 and a d60, I'd say they are most likely from a dodge.

also an interesting factoid: the M1028A1 Tactical Shelter Carrier w/ PTO and the M1031 Tactical Chassis both have the NP205 instead of the NP208 behind the TH400. I would look for a setup like that, do a complete 1 ton crossover.

There dodge axles. I would avoid them.

I'll chime in. I dont see what is so wrong with Dodge axles??? What exactly is so wrong with them to need to be avoided. You could put lockable hubs in them. Or Just leave 'em locked. haha. I do. Mine are 44/60's and are a big ol' hoss of some axles, but my first 4wd. My buddy has a Dana 70 for 300 bucks from drum to drum if interested. lol. Shipping'd kill ya. lol.

speaking of CUCV's I got a brand new driveshaft that we got and don't know where it came from. They were gonna throw it out so i snatched it up. It's long so I'd imagine it's the one going to the rear axle. Anybody wants it let me know and we can negotiate something

I had a '77 dodge W200 (well, it was a M88x militairy version). It had a dana 44 front/ dana 60 rear and the NP203 transfercase. It was a fulltime 4x4 setup.

Dodge and Chevy versions of the axle may differ...

No such monster.... the only ones with PTO are the mechanics service truck.

The M1028A1 and M1031 units had a slip-yoke rear output version of the NP-205, which was specified mainly for its PTO capacity.
