L6 Forged Piston Sources
 

I'm thinking of getting a set of forged pistons for a 292 L6 rebuild project in either .040- or .060-over.
When I rebuilt a 292 in 1977, I could get .030-over forged pistons from TRW at any parts store, but it's much rarer now.
Block I'm thinking about already ran 250,000 with .030-over TRWs, so it will have to run wider this time. TRW has moved into finance and out of auto parts.
Any suggestions?

Ross used to offer a discount to I/I members. Worth re-upping, if they still do that.

The hyperutectics i know wrong spelling, and I won't spell check.
Are good for around 10 psi with no loss of longevity, and have less clatter on start up if that matters for you.

On my last 292 build, I tried to stay at an 8 compression ratio, so I coulf use cheap 87 octane pump gas.

Like z said. I would go with a good hyper piston and call it good. Hypers take alot of abuse as long as preingnition is not experienced. Tuming is their big issue.

And I can't spell <<Ziegel..foust>>. Are you a VW, Mercedes or BMW guy? I had a Mercedes from when I was 19 to 23, then it blew up. I bought a '68 Chevy C/10 w/292, and I still have it.

Anyway, are you guys saying the Type-H pistons are as good as forged? Better bc cheaper, or lighter?
I'm not racing, just want a daily driver with a 20 year lifespan, and better thrust than stock.
Pipe dreams, like Lump Porting the Head and Turbocharging cross my thoughts occasionally. For now, I'm only planning ahead.

I was a VW nut for a few years, and I love German + Slavic stuff.

Type H pistons are considerably better then typical cast pistons, but they are not as strong as even cheap forged.

Due to what they are made of they clatter less at start up. Which to some people is a bigger deal, and nearly all stock pistons are now type H.

In a well built 292 6 gun going let's say for 400hp/tq, and no more then 5500 rpm. You will see no difference in anything measurable, and will likely gain a good bit of cylinder longevity. Due to there tightness when cold vs forged. Which is why forged rattle a bit.

So if I read you wanting for a bit more punch getting on the freeway or when towing. Type H pistons won't let you down.

If your shooting for a bad ass inliner over 500hp, and 6000+ rpm. Forged is the only way to go.
