Custom glass needed

1 Attachment(s)
I know someone here has to have a glass cutting or custom glass company they deal with. I recently purchased a “gulp” 1990 Dodge Dakota convertible that needs some work. Most importantly I need a drivers side door glass. The glass is different than a standard Dakota and I’m not sure if the standard pickup glass just needs to be cut or if it’s completely different. I can’t find any used glass or anything available from asc who was the company that converted these trucks back then.

Hoping someone here has a contact that can help. Any one that has had custom glass made for a top chop or something?

Could asc tell you if it was a cutdown stock glass?...if so, a good glass shop could fix you up

ASC closed in 2017 . I used to install a lot of ASC conversion convertible tops in the 90's

Unfortunately, I'm no help on the source of the glass, but I do love seeing the vert Dakotas. If a tree were to crush the cab on my 95 Dakota, I would consider converting it into a convertible

I had a 1990 Dakota convertible too. I liked it but some of the convertible related parts were a problem to find.

There is a convertible cab on Facebook marketplace in either PA or NJ. Just saying.

I’m finding that out the hard way.

I feel your pain. Try finding parts for a 1950 Packard coupe.

I went to the website that Grumpy posted to order some new side windows because mine are crispy critters.

They told me that they don't service my area. Oh well. Back to square one. :(

I sent an email last night. I will update after I get a response. Hopefully today.

Don't tempt me with a good time! For some reason, my parents let me park my Dakota in the garage when I came back to college back in January. I convinced them it fit better because it was shorter than the minivan. No risk of a tree branch, but I hope nothing happens to the house on top of it!

Being a side window, the stock glass would have been tempered. Once glass is tempered, it can't be cut, unless it is annealed first (about 1,000 degrees) and then retempered after cutting.

No luck with a response. I emailed them first then followed up with two phone calls where they took my vehicle info and said they would contact me but no response.

I have since tried a couple of local glass shops to no avail.

Anyone have a glass shop they have used recently?

I am willing to take the other side glass out and send it or deliver it to make a template.

Have you called Auto City Glass? https://www.autocityclassic.com/index.php?p=home

So I’ve tried everything suggested and all the local glass companies I can find and no luck. I found a glass broker and put a request out to them and there response was “at least $1000”. I responded with do you have a lead on the glass or a timeframe to find it and the response I got was “the quote is good”. Not feeling real comfortable about giving these guys a credit card number.

Like I posted a while back I used to install a lot of the ASC convertible tops on Camaro's , fire chickens , buick regals , caddy seville , dodge dakotas , I don't remember any of them having special door glass installed but rather the convertible top was designed and built to use the stock door glass . I remember you had to be careful ordering the tops on the Camaros because there was a difference in the width over the doors between year models . Can you post a few pics of the door glass with the top up and down ? :chevy:

If you take some measurements of the glass, I can compare it to my 95 this weekend

For some reason when asc made these trucks into convertibles they made them with a vent window. I have not taken the doors apart yet but the forward edge of the glass is straight.

I can see the problem here. The glass in the picture has a hole in the trailing edge. Those use a plastic guide that snaps onto the glass and holds the rear edge in the vertical runner. The regulator isn't like most regulators, in that it only has one point of contact to raise or lower the glass, so without the guide the glass will tilt in the window frame.

It looks like the convertible had the door frames cut off, much like our Blazers. Without that rear edge to guide the glass, they would have had to have something custom-made. It's likely become a unicorn, and the only way you'll find it if I'm correct is if you can find a used one somewhere.

Thanks for the heads up! I emailed them last night hoping they would see it in the am but the contact link must be bad. I am going to call as soon as they open. Fingers crossed!

Re: Custom glass needed

I don’t know if I missed it but when I called I got a recording that says they are a pick and pull yard that does not check availability of parts and you have to search online to see what vehicles they have. I didn’t see any 89-91 dakotas listed and couldn’t find a spot to enter a stock number. Thanks for trying but looks like I struck out again. :whine:
