Uncles '71 Tow Rig

My Uncle used to be a Drag Racer, and used his Suburban to tow his car all over Texas in the '70's and '80's. This is the reason I fell in love with the 3-Doors. Wish I had a better pic...

That's "Bad-Ass" Vince! I hope you don't mind if I share within your story, but my love for 3-Doors came while dating my future wife...and we would borrow her dad's '71 to go dirt-bike riding in the desert. This photo is from 1977 and shows how ironic the times were...two RM 80's in the back of Suburban, but a four bike trailer being towed by a '70 Boss 302 Mustang!!!

The Suburban that planted the seed. Very cool to have this history with Suburbans.

Suburbans were always a popular tow vehicle. This was back before extended cabs and crew cabs. If you had to tow and bring more people, Suburban was it. Suburbans had that niche market. The '71 Suburban I had (wish I had a picture) was exceptionally well kept. It was the tow vehicle for a Corvette restorer. I always complimented him on it. He worked at the Chevy dealer where I bought parts (80s/90s) and I talked to him a lot. One day he told me he was going to sell it and he thought he's offer it to me first. I felt so privileged along with obligated. It was my duty to own that Suburban and I made it happen!

Tim...your story paints a picture that's even better than a photo...but photos are nice to have too!

I don't think we ever took a picture of that one at all. My wife was driving a Samurai which just fit she, myself, our two kids, and a few grocery bags. I got it for her to drive to nursing school down in Baltimore. New, cheap on gas, 4wd, no worries about her making it down and back. Then came the offer to sell me the Suburban, so I sold a '72 K/10 I had, same color and all. It was great for trips and things like hauling kids and their friends around. The opposite end of the spectrum from the Samurai... including MPGs (402). But she rarely drove it, said it was too big :(, so I sold it and we traded the Suzuki in for a new '90 Blazer when she graduated.

You want a picture of it? Here we go. It was a medium blue '71 Custom Deluxe/10 with blue interior, 402/TH400, loaded with options, 8" rallyes with narrow 70 series whitewalls, roof rack. It had recently been hit in the rear and the guy insisted on all N.O.S. parts for the repair (remember, a Vette restorer who worked at a Chevy dealership). So it had a new bumper, tailgate, lights, and gas tank. I sure couldn't tell it had ever been repaired. Yes, I really wish I still had that!
