Fuel tank filler neck
 

Trying to get my filler neck mounted back up to see how i will finish up the tank. it has been a long time since i took it off...but is there a grommet or gasket that goes here? and also, where could i get the mounting screws?

for clarity im talking about the actual neck that the cap screws on. its held on to the truck with 3 very small screws

There is a gasket between the quarter panel and the flange. They don't reproduce the gasket but I used one for a Nova and modified the screw holes. I will have to look it up.

I don't remember the screws being anything specific. Just something unplated and not stainless so you can paint them.

are you using your stock tank? im mocking mine up now and if it mounts like original, the neck points towards the differential. my new tank mounts straight towards the filler neck,so they dont line up at all. wonder if these filler necks could be clocked and the mounting holes re drilled? or would that be a bad idea?

I have the stock tank. But I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're looking to do. I don't know if turning the fill is possible it has a lot of angles and has to pass through that cover on the wood floor. There's not a not of room through that space.

I have seen posts here where folks have used copper pipe to make the transition from the stock fill to the new tank. You might try doing some searches for fuel fill posts and maybe you can find some inspiration.

Worst-case money wise is have one fabricated by a competent weld shop.

I'll post up some pics when I get home. all the interior in the back is gutted, so there won't be anything interfering. the tank is a spectra gm15c, neck looks like it's 2". the stock filler neck looks like 1 1/4"? so Im going to have to figure that too.

got home late and couldnt see the pictures!

anyways...the first one is how it lines up factory. 2nd pic is if i clock it a little, the necks line up
. 3rd pic shows how i raised it, and move it forward a while back. with the stock tank in, i had to move the filler neck up and forward a little. it lined up nice in this location with the stock tank, but not with this one.

From the photos it looks like you have C-notched the frame. So I'm assuming you are raising the floor and able to move the tank up. That might make re-clocking the fill a workable solution since your whole floor will be a custom installation.

One thing to keep in mind is to try and avoid having a low spot in the fill. That will make putting fuel in slow and tedious.

The factory used that smaller line on the fill as a tank vent to allow faster fill-ups. Your new tank doesn't appear to have any provision to reconnect that vent. The lack of this vent with any low spot will become a constant source of annoyance every time you need fuel. Personally I would find a way to add that vent into the tank.

My 70 Javelin has a poorly designed fuel fill from the factory and forces me to hold the fuel nozzle in the fill and then only let the minimum fuel through the nozzle. It probably worked back in the day but with today's nozzles it's a pain.
Forgive me if you were already aware of this. Good luck! Keep us posted on how it works out. You're not the only one looking to do this.

actually the new tank has a vent in the sending unit, or at least I believe that's what it's for lol. you can see it in this pic, the one with the green tape on the end..closest to the diff. if I don't clock it, the other option would be to cut the stock tube down passed the curve.

what do you mean by low spot in the fill? as in, the fill tube dropping below the tank line?

This drawing I found and crudely added added to may help explain. You don't want fuel puddling in the fill. It will block air flow out of the tank and additionally can make the pump nozzle shut off.

My addtion to the picture shows a low spot that is below the bottom of the fuel inlet to the tank. This is where the fuel will puddle and cause issues filling the tank.

Are you planning on running a vented cap or using some sort of evap canister set up?

ah gotcha that's what I was thinking you were explaining. right now I have the cap that came with the truck but plan on buying a new one anyways. not running an EVAP canister
