700r4 swap complete.
I finally swapped out my th350 for a 700r4 it was a big job and it took me about 2 full days in my garage, it drives pretty sweet and handles great and the 4 wheel drive works really good along with the overdrive. It is like having a 5 speed, I wired up a lockup converter switch for 4th gear in the dash and that is where it feels like another gear. thanks for all your help with my research!

72-396,
Is there any way you could post pictures of your set up? And maybe post a few tips? I have a 71 4x4 chassis that currently has a 350/th350. The small block needs replacing. I can't decide on whether to go with a big block or stick with my small block. I also have a 700r4 waiting to be rebuilt and installed. Did you use the advanced adapters output shaft in your 700r4? Did you move the engine forward or did you cut the rear and lengthen the front drive shafts? |
I used the advanced adapter output shaft with my original adapter plate I had to move the crossmember / transfer case right mount back 1 7/8" I also lengthened my front drive shaft and shortened the rear. there was a lot of little things that came up as I was doing the job but nothing that could not be corrected. As far as the set up It is exactly the same as the th350 the only differenve is the output shaft and relocation of the crossmember. I was even able to use my linkage on the colum shift. the cooler lines connected without any problems and I had to get a longer detent cable for the 700r4 and I made a bracket and a mount to use everthing works really good. I am going to keep the ho72 with my 456 gears. If you decide on this swap I will be glad to help. as far as pictures, there is no visible difference when looking from underneath.
if wnat some I can email them to you. for some reason I am not able to post pics on this site I keep recieving an error code so email is best for pics Thanks |
Question: what route did you go with your driveshaft? I swapped mine back in 96 and at first I just went with a shortened one piece. The angle was too steep though and I kept killing u-joints. Eventually I modified the old two piece and went back to a 2 piece. Made a world of difference. Just curious. That 700 is a thing of beauty on the highway though isn't it? I remember the first time it hit that extra gear and I watched my tach. You could hear that engine breathing a sigh of relief. :D

Oh, my bad, you answered my question concerning the driveshaft. My screen doesnt' refresh for some reason when I click on a topic.

Am understanding correctly that you used the tranny to transfer case adapter from your TH350? And then the output shaft for the 700r4 from Advance Adapters? Shawn |
that is correct. if you need any help let me know.

Do you remember if it was part number 50-6900? I have the SM465 right now, and that shaft is $100 more (50-6903). So it may be cheaper in the long run if I start with a 205 that had a TH350 to begin with.

that sounds like the right part # but I am not 100% sure. I have no trouble with my 205 and it's strong. you might want to think about it.

What I don't understand is what happens to the length of your tranny/transfer case when you mate the 700r4 to a np205 through the 4spd to 205 adapter. The adapters on the manuals are longer than the th350 ones. Then you are going to put a longer transmission in front of it. It must work if advanced adapters sells a part but I'd try to talk to somebody on this board or elsewhere who is running that setup (a 10-spline np205, manual tranny adapter, and AA 10-spline output shaft in a 700r4) |
im putting on my torque converter on th e700r4 tranny how many click does it have so it sits right? Riddla
