You are suppose to set your timing with the vaccum advance hose disconnected and plug with a bolt or a my favorite is a golf tee .. then you can use a timing light on the harmonic dampener to read the timing
When adjusting the carb I always leave it connected ... If you vaccum advance is hooked to manifold vaccum .. the idle should increase slightly when you plug it back in ..
Adjusting idle mixture is best done with a vaccum gauge
