I think I used a piece of small ( 1/4" ) nylon rope looped around the hook part of the spring. The other part of the rope I wrapped around a piece of broom handle or dowel or something. The piece of wood gives you a good handle to pull with and keep your hands away from the spring. Springs scare the hell out of me. They move fast and can pinch like a nasty little girl.
