I for sure will not be buying any more polished aluminum wheels. What a PITA to take care of. Show rig is fine but on a driver is a lot of work to keep up.
If they are too far gone for just polish,use some 2000 gt sandpaper wet to start with and then some rubbing compound like 3M Perfect It II Fine or Regular cut and a 3" wool buffing pad or one of the Mothers red sponge balls,the long shaft one works best, and buff them back out followed up with the polish of your choice. This will get them "respectable" but if your after the "chrome" look,your in for some serious work with rouge and bobb's.
Wally World has some good polish I used on some old Centerlines,I'll have to get back on it's name and Southern Shine has some mail order that is good.
