Yep things have changed alot. Back in the day, I knew all the common V8's sound. Stock exhaust or not. Each make had its own characteristics that you could pick out easily, no matter what type of exhaust it had. Mopar & Olds were very distinct. Fords were the easiest to get "farmer cackle" as we called it- the pop & snap you would get when backing off the gas from low to mid rpms. GM's were more noted for "ripping the pipes" when backing of at high rpms. Today's typical big pipes off a cat just go ehhhhhhhhhhhhh when you back off. The ones I really can't stand are the Mustangs with straight thru X pipes. They are everywhere, and all sound the same. Must be something with a "me too" mindset. When I was young, If my ride or a friends sounded anything alike, one of us would be making changes ASAP.
