Its always better to be a little loose. Over tighten it and you will find out why when it starts to smoke . There is a proper way to torque the wheel bearing nut if you arent sure of exactly how tight to do it. You preload to 10ft/lbs, then back off then just tighten nut up just past finger tight. See how that feels. All i use to do wheel bearings is a pair of channel lock pliers. Ideally you should have no noticeable slop and still feel no drag on the bearing but get it as close as you can then back off until you can get the cotter pin in.
