How to turn an Xtreme wheel into a rally

- The S10 Extreme wheel is modified by machining, drilling, tapping, and polishing of the trim ring area. Note that part of the wheel's spokes are painted black to basically hide them so they are not noticable.
- The center section part of the wheel (yellow part) is ABS plastic. Yes, plastic. I molded it in my oven with molds made of wood. A drill press with a hole saw was used to cut the openings.
- The center cap is a short (3/5 size) cap now available from Wheel Vintiques. The part that snaps into a normal wheel has been removed and replaced with a PVC fitting with threads. A matching male thread fitting is attached to the wheel, and the center cap spins on and off like a knock-off style cap.

The S10 Extreme wheel had several pluses, and many minuses, in the quest to turn it into an early Rally style look alike.
Pluses:
- Perfect match for outer trim ring - after polishing of course.
- 16" X 8" was good size, not too big for straight line traction, not too small for good handling.
- Bolt pattern matched Camaro pattern.
- Design incorporated five openings around wheel. (As opposed to four or six or none.)
- Backspacing was close to needed amount.
- Could fit 13" Baer brakes with no modifications!
Minuses (and solutions reqiured):
- Backspacing was too little (too much would have been easier to handle). Required machining 1/8" off mounting surface. Still not perfect but all I could go and enough to work.
- Center of wheel, where center cap mounts sat too far out, making center cap sit out too far. Machined a little off here and used shorter than stock center caps. (From Wheel Vintiques)
- Center hole of wheel was slightly too small for Camaro hub, had to be machined.
- Trim area was painted a silver color, not polished, had to be polished.
- Extreme Wheels aren't common, not cheap. (No solution, they weren't cheap.)
