Thats an easy one --- there were not as many loaded trucks made back then thats why they are proportionately scarcer now. Has little to do with people "squirrelling away" the big block trucks. Heck, 1/2 the 2500 series trucks had 402's and few care about them.
Long bed production outnumbered shortbed production by a large margin, and Cheyenne Super production was very low in comparison to how many trucks came out with the base V8 or I-6 and maybe 2 or 3 other options.
Trucks were not dual purpose then and many were bought to work. Fluff like pwr steering and ac, etc. didnt mean anything to a hay hauler
Now its just the opposite, you have to go out of your way to find a new 08 truck that is lightly optioned
