If you got the $$$$ a 4L80E is they way to go. They are basically a TH400 that's a 4 speed with overdrive.

The other option which is $$$ is putting a Gear Vendors overdrive setup behind a TH400. Of the two, it's most likely the cheaper route but you're still looking at $2500+.

I'm in the same boat, trying to find a reasonable solution and have yet to find one. I had a 700R4 in my last '68, which worked fine but I never did any hauling/towing with it.
