I can only speak from my research and experience.
I intially bought early classic 2.5" drop spindle which is a great spindle but it would not allow me to run the brake kit I wanted (Wilwood 14" SLR).
I then had to go with the new CPP modular spindles which I believe will allow you more options for after market brakes. They (CPP Modular) also narrow the track width a bit, gave me more tire fender clearance in my "extreme" application, which was another benefit for me. i think the CPP Modulars a re a 2.0" drop.
