Low pressure for the back brakes would cause the combination valve to "shuttle" (ie, shift off center) turning on the light.
Hopefully, adding fluid restores the pressure to the rear, and the first "hard" depression of the brake pedal re-centers the combination valve, turning the light back off.
That's how it's supposed to work, anyway -
