Yeah worth checking, but I doubt it would have caused the noise issues you are having anyway. I think the wrong fluid typically attacks the synchro's over time/heat cycles. But definitely worth a second look..

PS I would take time to check the 5th gear fit while you have the t-case out, especially if you do not find something obvious in the t-case.
