You may need to put a third joint in there somewhere and support it off the frame. Some people use a Heim joint threaded into a homemede bracket and run the shaft through it.

Yeah the Z is the reason that I was thinking too. I'm thinking if I mount my rack as high as I can on the crossmember, and move the top joint up on the steering shaft as much as possible I'll be able to get away with a little frame trimming instead of more joint purchasing
