That's why I use a steel can type Fram GF-11. I had a plastic gas filter that melted thru when I had a carb fire on a 454 once. Electric fuel pump kept going after the engine stalled, since I had scoffed at the need for the safety switch that worked on positive oil pressure. I was lucky to walk away from that.
The glass ones like in the pic have another issue: the plastic filter medium is affected by the ethanol/alcohol additives present in most commercial gas. It swells -- causing a restriction.
So I prefer a steel can with a paper filter medium.
I use about the same placement as you have, but my fuel filter is about 4" higher than the manifold and stays cool enough there.
