The biggest advance they had was reverse flow cooling...which wasn't even GM's design. Evans designed the system and GM put it into the LT1, then proceeded to get sued for it.
Then, as mentioned, the opti-spark...which was poorly designed from the get go. On top of that, guys have been converting SBC heads (MUCH OLDER tech) to work with the reverse flow cooling on the LT1, because they flowed better AND because so few people ever made heads for it. The tech was dead before it started,
