Re: The Green Monster Just an old farm truck

I have now decided that I want my truck to be different With the rising cost of fuel and being tired of getting ten mpg I have a few options.....

I could upgrade my current 350 with a factory tbi unit
I could swap in an LT1
I could swap in an 5.3

Alll of these options would get me fuel injection and better MPG's along with more power. But none of them get great mpg. So decided to go diesel.
After doing some searching around i really wanted a cummmins but i just can't afford one at this point in my life. Plus the added weight would mean I would need to convert to 1 ton running gear which I also want to do but can't really afford right now. So I deceided to go the route less traveled and picked up a used Detroit 379(6.2L) out of a 1985 3/4 ton. These are not known to be a powerful diesel but they are known for fuel economy. The 6.2 will be an upgrade powerwise over my stock 350 and gain me mechanical fuel injection. In addition it is a bolt in set up that will not require heavy modification which will keep cost down. Also The 6.2 is kind of overlooked motor. for my application it is perfect. Also I picked this rusty motor for one main reason........ IT has a dealer installed BANKS aftermarket Turbo which i hear really wakes up a 6.2

Here is the donor truck:
