GM renamed the 700R4 to 4L60 in an effort to standardize their naming conventions across all transmission models. Then the 4L60E came along later, which is the electronic version.

If I recall, the convention decodes as follows:

4 = 4 speed (6 = 6 speed, etc)
L = longitudinal (T = transverse for FWD)
60 = series (60, 65, 80, etc)
E = electronic control
