Even a 1/2 ton crew cab shortbox today has a longer wheelbase than many of the 1 ton 67-72's.
I did haul 10,000lbs from Washington to Minnesota a month ago and I was grateful to have an 01 2500hd for that. It was a comfortable and safe ride but that is mainly due to the 157" wheelbase, hydroboost disc brakes, massive frame, etc. I can't imagine doing the same thing in a 2012 1/2 ton 2wd! Its about the equipment specs and not just the year.
