Lots of smart folks with good advice here. First, your truck has huge potential so don't get discouraged, many people would trade places with you just to have a sweet short fleet. Whatever the fix is it will be well worth the money so don't sweat spending the cash to make it right. Even if you have to save up for a while.
As far as the wife goes....your truck has a bed, use it.
