I did on s10 frame and I make them about 3.5" off frame to the top of the bushing and cap I used.

From what I've seen think I've settled on somewhere between 3.5 and 4 from the frame to the top of the bushing. Post 39 here:

shows where he mounted his 2.5 in. Even he said he wish he went a little higher because of clearance issues.
