My last small block was 10.5-1 compression alum heads and a nasty roller cam. It ran at 200 with a 195 t stat in traffic with the dual electric fans. Stock water pump and stock 4 core brass radiator. Nothing special. On a hard blast running up through high gear it would get to 215 or so but as soon as I took my foot off the loud pedal the temp instantly came back down.
I think my motor was fine. Had a brand new water pump on it. All new gaskets. Motor was flushed. Didn't have any leaks. I was running a 4 core radiator. Water was moving just fine through it. I tried a lot of different thermo's for all sorts of different opening temps from cheap ones to high performance ones. Never not once overheated on me while not running a thermo.
