If you are getting good spark, have compression and gas flow - there's no reason it shouldn't continue to run. Maybe a huge vacuum leak? Gotcha. Not the way I would do it, but it works.
I have a spark plug with a wire and an alligator clip hose clamped to it. Put the clip on a ground, put the wire on the plug. Crank it over and watch it spark (or not, as the case may be). Works well and is pretty easy.
