Regardless of how the tank is mounted it has to come up solid against something so it doesn't move around and chaff a hole in the tank. The answer in either case is to isolate the mounts using a flexible material of some sort like rubber or polyurethane. Not that different from how the engine, T-case, axles, exhaust etc. are mounted to the frame. I had assumed that this was understood, but I guess not.
