well, i know of a truck that clears at lower than stock height... haha
but yes, a lift is generally required. if you want to push the engine back a ways it helps you get it lower, but as ryan said, with the GM front diff, the driveline is close. oil pan can be modified to help with that, but it is easier to lift it a touch. lifted 4 inches and these trucks are still comparable to todays OEM trucks in height.
