I'd take lowridder up on his offer and focus on changing the distributor and getting it running right before tackling the alternator. Didn't you get the generator rebuilt and get a new voltage regulator? Nothing wrong with the original generator system, I ran mine until 2000. Only reason GM changed was because cars were drawing higher amperage loads and alternators were better way to deal with it. Stock trucks without AC, etc. do fine with 36 amps....
