Not a stupid question at all. Here's a thought, but verify before you try it. Go over the hood and any other surface-rusted areas with CLR and a scotch brite pad. It should remove the worst of the rust and leave a nice patina. Then clear coat the truck to keep it from rusting any more. Pretty sure this has been covered in threads here already -- a search might find more info. If I run across it I'll post a link.
