Don't know about the talent part.......its just taken trial and error. I painted a few cars and took auto body at the local community college after high school to work on a different 63 around 20 years ago. I have painted some small things since, but this build has been the biggest paint job I've undertaken in the last 20 years.
I used to be terrified to paint, but like most things practice will give you what you need to establish your own technique to paint. The mix ratios can be looked up or gotten from the suppliers and the base coat can even be purchased premixed, so just practice after that. The worst thing you can do is have to sand it down and repaint again. And I was just there with the front end a few weeks ago when the color didn't match.
Space can be a big factor for a lot of people. I have the space, but not a proper paint booth, but I have still have good success (err...maybe luck).
Thanks for the positive comments.
Note: I'm just using a 30 gal upright compressor and a lowes mid level HVLP gun, so it can be done at home and with marginal money. I do buy good paint, currently using the PPG Omni line.
