With my old '70 D200, that area was completely rusted out (gone). Due to being only 15 at the time, I used whatever I could to make that area secure, water/salt proof and strong. I ended up encapsulating that whole area with fiberglass boat cloth and fiberglass resin. Worked fantastic.
That truck had been used by Lobstermen to haul boat/traps and such out of saltwater it whole life. The bottom half of the truck was completed rusted out. My truck probably should never put back on the road, but try to tell that to a 15 year old with an imagination and a desire to make it happen. LOL!

Truck passed Maine vehicle inspection and the doors shut smoothly the whole time I owned it. Success!
