I have dealt with similar issues as your wife, and if detected early, it's 100% surviveable. They have procedures now that work incredibly well. My skin probably got smoked before I was 21 years old due to sun exposure. It wasn't until my 40s that it started to appear. I get checked up regularly, and on occasion, I'll get zapped with liquid nitrogen or have a spot removed. No problem. The damage has been done, now I'm all about prevention and maintenance.
