I'm guessing the potential for "massive fire" is because if a hose leaks above the engine it could pool in the intake manifold and potentially be ignited by a spark inside the distributor cap. I've seen it happen. Luckily, the hood was open and we were able to put it out immediately.
The hose by the fuel pump would most likely leak away from the engine.
