After I posted this I took the still-warm carburetor off another truck and it ran fine. I then put the original Holley 600 off of this truck on that truck, which drove fine with it.

I put the carb back on this truck and it works fine now. Not sure what to make of it. I put the mechanical throttle linkage back on it and changed nothing else on the truck. The only thing I can come up with is that the mechanical linkage could be a ground to the carb/intake if the distributor somehow wasn't grounding, but I still don't get why it would run high up if that was it.

I'll have to investigate further and see if I can come up with anything. At least it works now...
