I have been doing this step in my mind for months and it was always the way I thought it would work.

The other was to level frame, set the cross member up to the bottom of the frame and take a incline reading on the cross member. Then cut the notch to match the incline (if any)
The frame is leveled on jack stands. I then cutout the template Scott provided and marked the frame. I then doubled checked the horizontal cut and made sure it was level.

The only problem I ran into is the template Scott provided for the notch only references the center line of the front shackle as 2.59" from the front of the frame. My measurement was different. Once I compensated for that difference all my other measurements on the instructions worked out.
