Crank gear dot goes "up" at 12 o'clock position.
Cam gear dot goes "down" at 6,0clock position.
There will be 2 little dots on the gears to line up. This will put the engine on the #6 compression stroke. Then rotate the crank to bring the cam gear dot to the "top" 12 o'clock position and you will now be on the #1 compression stroke.
Clear as mud?
Also... for what it's worth... you couldn't pay me to install a used cam and lifters nowadays.
