You are correct on the nitrogen. The KYB's and Billsteins are Gas Charged. I've installed both and gas can be a pain. Soon as you cut the strap to install them you better have the bolts in hand and the other side mounted.

The nitrogen is in there to help keep the shock cool I believe. (Same a rear dirt bike shock)
