well sonny, if the hood fits ok without the spring I would check the hinges for wear first. if they pan out ok then start shimming the hinges until you fuigure out which way the shims affect the hood alignment and go from there. I would say, without seeing the project, that your hinges are possibly worn out so they allow movement from unloaded-no spring, to loaded-with spring. otherwise the addition of a spring would make a marginal difference. check for worn out hinge bushings and pivot points and also for bent brackets on the hinges. new hinges wouldn't break the bank compared to bodyshop time by the hour.
