Starters are fairly cheap. My theory on this is if it's an old starter, replace the complete starter and solenoid -usually between $35 - $50.

In the past I have also replaced just the solenoid if I suspect it to be the problem and in other instances the starter gear (bendix) if the starter itself is in good shape.
