Local ad here from a gentleman who has a 4L80 just rebuilt (0 miles) for $1200. What's the controller you speak of?

It's what I did in my big block 1970 truck, and it's great.
Now if you could find used parts (like a working used 4L80E for about $500) it'd be a lot cheaper.
Another option is the 200-4R which can be built fairly strong, is about the same length, and still has a mechanical speedo drive. That's what I started with but it only lived about 50 miles in my truck (had lived for 10,000 in my car, don't know what the rebuilder messed up!).
I think the build 200-4R is still my preferred option because you don't need ANY electronics.
