3.07's in my 396 Suburban and it runs well. Never wanting for more gear and cruises at 70 no problem. It's the cheapest, easiest way to do it. You could keep what you have in case you go overdrive later, or sell it to help fund your new setup.
Not sure why you'd have to lose your posi carier when switching to taller gears.
