It really does work, you'll be well pleased .
Basic 7th grade physics .
_any_ breakerless ignition drives the system to better output, opening the gaps a little bit forces the coil to provide hotter sparks .
I had an old '76 GMC with 292 that burned lots of oil , added '77 Nova HEI dizzy and opened the gaps to .070" (too much !) and it ran great, stopped smoking and flew through the California smog test easily .
Even points ignition systems run better with .035" , an old racer's trick from the 1950's .
.040" is a good balance for the Pertronix .
FWIW, I have a few twenty plus year old Pertronix Ignitor systems that still work perfectly and have never hiccuped nor failed ~ those who'll tell you they're unreliable are lazy and never took the time to ensure the coil was correct for the Ignitor .
