Basic 7th grade physics .

_any_ breakerless ignition drives the system to better output, opening the gaps a little bit forces the coil to provide hotter sparks .

I had an old '76 GMC with 292 that burned lots of oil , added '77 Nova HEI dizzy and opened the gaps to .070" (too much !) and it ran great, stopped smoking and flew through the California smog test easily .

Even points ignition systems run better with .035" , an old racer's trick from the 1950's .

.040" is a good balance for the Pertronix .

FWIW, I have a few twenty plus year old Pertronix Ignitor systems that still work perfectly and have never hiccuped nor failed ~ those who'll tell you they're unreliable are lazy and never took the time to ensure the coil was correct for the Ignitor .
I will agree with you on ty he gap , my 67 c50 with original 327 has the pentronix and I gapped them .40 runs and starts like new .
My 68 ,69, 71 and 72 have HEI'S all running .45 on the gap , I was amazed how it woke up the 292 in my 68
