Ok. So the transmission is NOT fixed. I think the brief return of 4th gear is due to my efforts to replace the cable: I did a lot of tugging on the hook for the cable, leading me to think the TV valve is sticky. Also, the transmission responds to TV cable adjustments only when cold. When good and warm, shifting goes back to the same as any other TV cable setting. Still haven’ had a look at the governor for downshifting.
