These 5-7,000 lbs. front axles allowed tighter a turning radius (important in a long school bus) and required the wider front fenders usually seen on 60 series tandems.

They make it a better looking truck (or bus) as well, in my opinion anyway. Love those Wide Fenders, '60 to '72. Even though GM was bragging on the Narrow ones back in '63.
