Easiest way is to remove the whole assembly as far as I'm concerned.....

Be *REAL* careful futzing around with that assembly. Many years ago, I was pulling mine out, and the pedal arm got tapped, and the spring pulled it up over-center and lopped off the end of my finger in the process. That spring is No $#!+ serious.
