I would.
When I R & R ed my 292 in '05, I got dowel pins from the Chevy dealer -- they didn't fit. I got Leo Santucci's specified .452~'' pins, they didn't fit right either. My machinist came up with 3 pins that did fit, but I didn't mic them for posterity. My advice is to play that size by ear. The 292 is a torque monster, so don't skip the dowel pins.
Santucci gives an alternative in his book: "Chevy Inline Six Cylinder Power Manual," you could have the machinist tap the dowel pin holes to 1/2''-20 and use 3 more bolts there, but they have to have 12-point heads for clearance. Really a competition grade option.
