I did almost the same process, but did not wet the salt. (as I had tailgate flat on bench)


Step 1 paint tailgate flat black (looks shiny in pic, but paint still wet)

Step 2 paint tailgate red oxide, and any other "rust color" you want (oranges, browns, yellows...)

Step 3 sprinkle salt where you want rust to be seen

Step 4 Paint entire tailgate with color of truck (mist a few coats to avoid salt from moving)

Step 5 brush off salt and sand to desired look
